Tableau: Create Groups in Data | Fundamentals
Please download the dataset:
We have learned how groups can support your data analysis needs.
Now let's apply what you've learned about how to create a group within the Data pane in the following activities.
The guided activity below will prompt you to take specific actions and provide feedback and guidance along the way.
You want to find out average life expectancy for three countries within the Oceania region, and then compare that with other regions.
You will create a group named Oceania for the three countries, Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, and compare the group with the rest of the countries.
Step 1: Opening the Starter File
- Start by launching Tableau and opening the relevant starter file that contains the data you want to work with.
- Navigate to the Dimensions pane within Tableau.
- Locate the arrow icon and click on it to reveal a dropdown menu. From the options presented, choose "Create" followed by "Group."
- While holding the Ctrl key, select Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea from the list of countries.
- With the desired countries selected, click on the "Group" option.
- In the dialog box that appears, assign the name "Oceania" as an alias for the newly created group.
- For the remaining countries that are not part of Oceania, we'll group them together as "Other."
- Make sure to check the "Include 'Other'" checkbox in the dialog box.
- Give a suitable name to the group field; for instance, let's call it "Oceania Region."
Step 5: Updating the Field Name
- Within the "Field Name" text field, remove the existing entry, which is "Country (group)," and replace it with "Oceania Region."
- Confirm your changes by clicking the "OK" button.
- To visually represent the newly created groups,
drag and drop the group field you just made onto the "Rows" section
of your visualization.
Great work! You've created a group to compare the average life expectancy of three countries in the Oceania region to all other countries.
