You’re preparing a report for management. They want to see how the sales forecast compares to actual sales. In this hands-on-activity, build a combined axis chart to answer the question: How does Budget Sales compare to actual Sales over the last few years.

Good luck!

Create a line chart for Budget Sales over a continuous range of time, by month, using the Date field.

  1. Drag Budget Sales to Rows.

  2. Drag Date to Columns.

  3. Point to Date on Columns and click the down-arrow.

  4. Click Month   May 2015.

Make the chart dual axis using the Sales field.

  1. From the Data pane, drag Sales to Rows, to the right of Budget Sales.

  2. Point to Sales, click the down-arrow, and click Dual Axis.

Change the Budget Sales line graph to a bar graph and change the color of the Budget Sales bars to light gray and the Sales line to green.

  1. Click the Marks card for Budget Sales

  2. Click the drop-down menu and click Bar

  3. Click the Marks card for Sales.

  4. Click Color and then click Edit Colors.

  5. Click Budget Sales and select the light gray tile.

  6. Click Sales and select the green tile.

  7. Click OK.

Change the chart to a combined axis chart and the left axis title to Budget Sales & Sales.

  1. Right-click the right axis and click Synchronize Axis.

  2. Right-click the right axis again and uncheck Show Header.

  3. Double-click the left axis.

  4. Change the title to Budget Sales & Sales.

  5. Save the workbook.

Great work! You’ve created a combined axis chart to compare Budget Sales with actual Sales.
