We’ve explored how to create a hierarchy with Tableau. Here’s your opportunity to apply your knowledge by creating a hierarchy using Superstore data.

You are working in a sales workbook, and you want to see how sales are ranked within each region by sales person.

To support this analysis,  create a hierarchy that includes Region and Sales Person, and drill down into the hierarchy to compare rankings for each. Good luck!

  • Create a hierarchy called Sales Person by Region using the fields Region and Sales Person.

  1. In the Data pane, drag the Sales Person field onto the Region field. This opens a dialog box.

  • Name the hierarchy Sales Person by Region.

  1. In the Create Hierarchy dialog box, next to  Name, change Region, Sales Person to Sales Person by Region.
  2. Click OK.

  • Drag the new hierarchy to Rows and expand it.

  1. Drag Sales Person by Region to Rows.
  2. Click the [+] to drill down. (This can be performed on the shelf or in the view.)

  • Sort Sales in descending order.

  1. In the view, hover over the Sales axis heading, and click the descending sort icon.

You’ve created a hierarchy that allows you to see how sales are ranked and to compare Sales Person by Region
